Extractions and Wisdom Teeth
An extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket. There are multiple reasons for teeth to be extracted from the mouth. These reasons include crowding, impaction, a solution to periodontal disease, severe decay to the tooth, or teeth that have been affected by trauma to the jaw.
Do my wisdom teeth need to be extracted?
If there is not enough room in the mouth for the wisdom tooth it will become impacted, which can cause pain and discomfort in the mouth, as well as lead to infection. Typically, wisdom teeth will become a concern in your late teenage years to early twenties. You may have your wisdom teeth removed at any time of life, but it is usually recommended to have them removed earlier so that they do not become a source for discomfort, infection or decay as it may be difficult to keep partially erupted wisdom teeth clean.
